Choose the right approach for your deck
A new walking surface, a structural repair and a full rebuild are different projects. Understanding the existing frame and how you want to use the space helps narrow the right approach.
Resurface, repair or rebuild?
Resurfacing replaces walking surfaces while retaining suitable underlying construction. It starts with a review of the existing supports, frame, connections and condition—not simply the boards. Localized repairs may make sense for an otherwise suitable assembly. Extensive deterioration or a substantially different layout may call for rebuilding.
Wood and composite decking
Wood and composite offer different appearances and care expectations. Composite selection also affects installation details: framing spacing, board layout and fastening must follow the chosen product’s requirements. New boards do not correct unsuitable framing. What changes the scope of a deck project?
Square footage alone does not describe the work. Height, access, existing conditions and finish selections can lead to very different proposals for decks of a similar size.
- The structure. New versus retained supports and framing, connection to the home, demolition and required planning.
- Access and circulation. Deck height, stairs, landings, doors and the way the project meets the yard.
- The finish package. Decking choice, board pattern, railings, trim and any included built-in features.
Ask the estimate to distinguish retained components from new work. If you want composite resurfacing, verify that the existing frame is suitable for the selected product before committing to the finish.

Yes. RGR can discuss replacing or rebuilding an aging deck. Existing framing and supports need review before deciding whether any parts can be reused.
Do you work with composite decking?

Can you repair just the stairs or railing?
